You must register with a dentist to receive routine treatment and out-of-hours treatment.
You can find your nearest dentist through NHS choices
You have to pay for all dental services. NHS dentists tend to be cheaper than private dentists but there is a limited number of NHS dentists and often long waiting lists. Here treatment is graded in three bands and so you will pay one of these fixed costs depending on the work you have done. Private dentistry is priced in terms of exactly what treatment you receive.
NHS Price Bands
- Band 1: £18.80 includes an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.
- Band 2: £51.30 includes all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).
- Band 3: £222.50 includes all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.
There are some exemptions to paying for dental treatment.
